dispensing love with such ease.

He had cut a wide swath through London, only to find that satiation didn't come as easily as it had before his conscience lay scarred and in ruins. And physical ease really didn't mean that much when he paid with guilt.

He had sought willing partners from the lists of the ton, auburn haired women with sultry mouths and firm, soft fleshiness. At first, he was incensed that they did not, even in the darkness, assuage that yearning deep inside. Then, he was simply unable to perform, as if his brain were firmly tied to his loins, and logic ruled. His reputation for moodiness increased, and with his shunning of available women, and his aversion to society, so did his allure. He became an increasing challenge because of his apathy, but the more they threw themselves at him, the starker the contrast between Katherine and the noble women who found nothing incorrect about their own immorality, but who would have castigated Katherine for it. He was chaste, and it was laughable.

His mind had made a paragon of virtue out of Katherine, as though she'd died a martyr, saintly, blameless. He needed to see her, to make her human again. He had spent the last six months praying. Fervent, soul deep prayers that she lived, and prospered, and would not have been made the less for those few weeks at Mertonwood. He needed to exorcise her from his brain, his body.

Or maybe he just needed her.
